ADVOCATE
What Is the Role of an Advocate in the Bible?
The apostle John affirms that Jesus functions as an “advocate” on behalf of his people (1 Jn. 2:1). The Greek word for advocate is parakletos, literally suggesting the sense “to call to one’s side.” The term denotes “one who appears on behalf of another.”
While Satan is the adversary who is ever ready to accuse God’s people (Rev. 12:10), Jesus is our “attorney” and is always on hand to plead the case of his disciples who are striving to walk continuously in the light of divine instruction (1 Jn. 1:7).
What Is the Definition of Agnostic in the Context of Bible Terms?
The word “agnostic” does not appear in the English Bible. The term derives, however, from Greek roots suggesting the idea “not known.”
When Paul visited Athens, he noted that the pagans there had erected an altar to an “unknown” (agnostos) god (Acts 17:23). The apostle used that inscription as the basis of his sermon, in which he proclaimed to them the known God!
Paul used a kindred form of the word in his epistle to the saints at Corinth when he charged that some have “no knowledge” (agnosia) of God (1 Cor. 15:34). Peter employed the same term for the “ignorance” of certain foolish men (1 Pet. 2:15).
In a philosophical sense, an agnostic asserts that there is insufficient evidence to confidently affirm the existence of God. Hence, man cannot know, one way or the other, whether there is a supreme Being. Such an ideology was not endorsed by the great personalities of scripture (cf. Psa. 46:10; 2 Tim. 1:12), and it ignores a vast library of evidence that testifies otherwise, informing us of the truth.

ADOPTION
What Is the Biblical Understanding of Adoption?
The Greek word is huiothesia, from huios, “son,” and tithemi, “to set, put, or place.” The word suggests the idea of putting one into the position of a son. It is used five times in the New Testament.
• The Christian’s reception of the Holy Spirit (see Acts 2:38) is God’s pledge that he has been adopted as a son. Unlike Christ, who was a son as to his very nature (i.e., deity; cf. Heb. 5:8), we have been adopted into the family of God by the new birth process (Jn. 3:3-5; cf. Gal. 4:5; Eph. 1:5).
• The future resurrection of the body on the last day is spoken of as an adoption (Rom. 8:23). This suggests there is a fuller measure of inheritance than what we presently enjoy.
• The nation of Israel experienced adoption in the sense it was selected and used as a divine instrument to facilitate the coming of the Messiah (Rom. 9:4). However, each Jew is accountable to God for their own personal obedience (Rom. 1:16-17).
Adultery is sexual intimacy between a married person and someone other than their lawful mate. The act begins in the mind (Mt. 5:28; Mk. 7:21) and ultimately manifests in physical union (cf. Jn. 8:4). Adultery may be a casual “fling,” or it may involve a relationship under the guise of “marriage” (i.e., marriage outside the bounds of scriptural authorization).
Jesus taught that the person who divorces their spouse, unless the divorce is because of fornication and marries another, is committing adultery (Mt. 19:9).
Another passage suggests that a divorced woman, simply by being “put away,” becomes an adulteress (Mt. 5:32). However, this cannot be the passage’s meaning.
• The sense may be that the “put away” woman is exposed to the temptation of finding a new partner and becoming an adulteress. • Or, the meaning could be that the mere fact that her husband has divorced her may lead others to suspect that she has committed adultery, hence hanging that reputation upon her.
Adultery is a forgivable sin, provided the sinful activity is discontinued, and God’s pardon is sought in the divinely prescribed fashion (1 Cor. 6:9-11).

ACCURSED
What Does It Mean to Be Accursed in the Bible?
The word “accursed” (KJV) translates the Greek anathema four times in the New Testament. It carries the weighty idea of being “devoted to destruction,” a term that should be approached with caution and understanding.
• In Romans 9:3, Paul’s profound love for his people is evident as he expresses his willingness to be “cut off from Christ” if it could somehow have brought salvation to the Jews. This was a figure of speech known as hyperbole, an exaggeration for emphasis, but it underscores the apostle’s deep affection for his people.
• Elsewhere, Paul contends that no one, speaking by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, could declare Jesus “accursed” (1 Cor. 12:3). The meaning of “accursed” here may be — “deserving of death.” This may reflect a charge being made about Christ by some at that time.
• Those who mingle the gospel of Christ with false doctrines will be eternally cut off from communion with God — if they continue in such a godless course (Gal. 1:8-9).
• Anyone who refuses to “love the Lord” is destined to be banished from God’s presence, hence devoted to destruction (1 Cor. 16:22). To love him in the fullest sense is to submit to his will to secure salvation (Jn. 14:15).
Luke wrote the Book of Acts. He addressed it to Theophilus, a Gentile Christian official.
The aim of the narrative is to record the establishment of the church of Christ on the day of Pentecost (see reference) and the spread of the Christian movement throughout the ancient world — all the way to Rome.
The book, a comprehensive record of some thirty-three years of Christian history, delves into the details of Peter’s ministry among the Jews in the first division (chapters 1-12). The final portion (13-28) provides a detailed account of Paul’s labor among the Gentiles. The book meticulously records numerous examples of how men and women became Christians under the oversight of inspired apostles.

ABRAHAM’S BOSOM
What Is Abraham’s Bosom in the Bible?
In the first century, it was the Jewish custom to recline at the table during meals. Thus, the saying, “recline in the bosom,” signified a place of honor near the host. The apostle John enjoyed such an honor at the Passover supper the night before Christ was crucified (cf. Jn. 13:23). The phrase is also used for Jesus’ intimate relationship with his Heavenly Father (Jn. 1:18).
In Luke 16:23, the phrase “Abraham’s bosom” describes the state of blessedness afforded the beggar Lazarus following his death. The term not only reflects a reward but also a place of honor and implies consciousness. It represents the condition of the godly soul between the time the body dies and its final resurrection. • Idols and the worship thereof was an abomination unto God (Isa. 66:3; Jer. 4:1; 2 Kgs. 16:3). • Worship offered to God when done with the wrong spirit is also abominable (Prov. 15:8; Isa. 1:13). • Sexual sins, e.g., homosexuality, are an abomination before God (Lev. 18:22). • Dishonorable treatment of one’s fellows was characterized similarly (Prov. 12:22; 20:23).
Note carefully the list of abominations cataloged in Proverbs 6:16ff. Those who yield themselves to the practice of abominable actions will not be permitted into heaven (Rev. 21:27).
What Is the Abomination of Desolation in the Bible?
This phrase has roots in the Old Testament. The book of Daniel alludes to “the abomination that makes desolate” (cf. 9:27, 11:31, 12:11).
It is generally believed that 11:31 is a reference to the abominable (evil) power that desolated the Jewish system during that historical period between the Testaments, particularly the reign of the Seleucid ruler, Antiochus Epiphanes(c. 175–63 B.C.). That heathen official viciously persecuted the Jews, attempted to destroy the Scriptures, and desecrated the temple.
Clearly, though, the reference in Daniel 9:27 is to the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70, when the idolatrous Romans crushed the Jewish regime, and Judaism, as a religious system, came to an end — and that by divine design (Mt. 22:7). This is the interpretation given the passage by the Lord himself (Mt. 24:15; Mk. 13:14; Lk. 21:20).
The significance of the expression in Daniel 12:11 is more difficult to determine. Some see it as a description of Antiochus’ persecution, while others view it as a reference to the destruction of Jerusalem and the end of the Jewish sacrificial system. It may be that Antiochus’ onslaught prefigured the desolation that the Romans would ultimately bring.
The idea that it refers to a terrorizing “Antichrist” who will wreak havoc upon the people of God near the end of time, preceding an earthly reign of Christ, is without scriptural justification.

This Daily Bible Reading Schedule does not follow the order in which the books appear in the Bible. It is rather a chronological arrangement. The poetic and prophetic books of the Old Testament are inserted in the historical books at the point in the narrative where they are thought to have been written. Likewise, the Epistles of the New Testament are inserted in the narrative of the Book of Acts. The chronological order used here is agreeable to most conservative Bible scholars. I Am Resolved — Robert Johnson
It is a New Year! While much will continue on this year that we are familiar with, a new year offers a great opportunity to make changes, to do things differently than in the past, to seek to allow God to help mold us in His image, “beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory” (2 Corinthians 3:18). Resolutions are nothing new to us, but being effective at keeping them may be, as 7 of 10 people who make them will have abandoned them before the end of January. What can we do this year to help us do better at following through, with the help of our Lord?
It seems to me we all could use a big dose of honesty when it comes to evaluating ourselves. It is easy to create a façade for others to see, and then we con ourselves into believing it. This is the way sin works. This is what the Hebrews writer warns against. “But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called today, so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin” (Hebrews 3:13). Sin deceives us, and then hardens our hearts so we will not question ourselves and make changes. As Paul urges, “Examine yourselves” (2 Corinthians 13:5), and we do so by letting the Word of God penetrate to the innermost part of our being, showing us where we are at odds with what it says (Hebrews 4:12-13). How honest are you with yourself?
It also seems we need to recognize how selfishness works to set ourselves in God’s rightful place in our lives. Selfishness is at the heart of every sin, and by thinking and acting selfishly we determine how we live, rather than letting God be in control of our lives. Jesus knew very well how big a problem this would be for His disciples, so He said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). This is why Paul said he “crucified himself” with Christ, and that “it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). Obviously, Satan does not mind us being religious as long as we let ourselves call the shots.
How can we know if self is more in control than God is? Coupled with the virtue of honesty, ask yourself some basic questions:
• Is it what I want that always seems to come first (one may substitute the word “need” instead of “want,” as need sound more noble than want as a desire)? • Is my relationship with others based on what I get from them, or what we can do for each other? • How do I respond if what I want (need) does not come to pass? • If confronted with these issues, do I automatically have an answer, an explanation, for why it is okay, or do I give serious thought to my motives (in other words, am I always right, do I have all the answers)? • Do I even consider such things as these (many people, who act selfishly, would be shocked to have someone accuse them of such, having acted selfishly for so long it is not even a consideration anymore)?
It may be resolutions are hard to keep because we handcuff ourselves from the start. It may be we do not examine ourselves to resolve to change, because we have let sin and self deceive us into a false sense of security. None of us is perfect, and there is room for improvement in every life. What will the New Year bring? What will this New Year bring for you personally? Will you allow God to help you grow in His image, or does Satan have the upper hand? “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap” (Galatians 6:7). On the other hand, “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:3-5).
