Our brother Robert has been delivering an exceptional series of lessons from John 15. I posed a question about “The Fruit” to AI. Here is the response with scripture references.
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:5 ESV
What Exactly Is the Fruit?
Jesus does not leave us guessing. The fruit that flows from abiding is the visible, practical evidence that His life is flowing through us. It is not something we manufacture by sheer willpower or human effort. It is the natural overflow of His life in the branch.
First, the fruit is Christlike character—a transformed life that reflects Jesus. This includes the qualities the Spirit produces: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). It is the “peaceful fruit of righteousness” that comes through the Father’s pruning and discipline (Hebrews 12:10–11). When we abide, the life of the Vine begins to shape our attitudes, reactions, and daily conduct so that others can see Jesus in us.
Second, the fruit is obedience to Jesus’ commandments and abiding in His love. “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love” (John 15:10). A branch that remains connected does not live independently; it lives in glad submission to the Vine. Obedience is not the root of our relationship with Christ—it is the fruit of it.
Third, the fruit is love for one another. Immediately after speaking of abiding and fruit-bearing, Jesus commands, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:12–13). Later He repeats, “These things I command you, so that you will love one another” (John 15:17). Mutual, self-sacrificing love is a primary mark of true discipleship and a clear expression of the fruit that remains.
Fourth, the fruit includes full joy and effective prayer. Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full” (John 15:11). And “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you” (John 15:7). When His word shapes our desires, our prayers align with His will, and joy—His own joy—fills us.
Finally, the fruit is good works and a lasting witness that glorifies God. “By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples” (John 15:8). Jesus chose and appointed His followers “that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide” (John 15:16). This includes productive Christian living, acts of service, and helping others come to know and obey the gospel so that the fruit continues and multiplies.
In every case, the fruit is visible. It can be seen in our lives. It is not hidden. Claiming to be a branch means nothing if there is no fruit. The absence of fruit signals a problem with the connection. The presence of increasing fruit—“fruit… more fruit… much fruit”—proves that we are truly joined to the Vine and brings glory to the Father.

Do Angels Minister to Christians Today?
Wayne Jackson
Please explain Hebrews 1:14. Do angels minister to Christians today?
The inspired passage poses this question: “Are they [angels] not ministering spirits, sent forth to do service for the sake of them that shall inherit salvation?” There are several points worthy of note here.
First, as the question is framed in the Greek New Testament, there is the use of the negative particle ouchi (“not”) within the question. This type of construction implies an affirmative answer. The sense is then: “They are ministering spirits, aren’t they?” And so, yes, angels are spirits who minister to the Lord’s people.
Second, the participle “being sent forth” is in the present tense. It suggests that angels are continually sent by God as human needs align with the divine will. They serve as servants on behalf of those who are to inherit salvation (i.e., to enjoy it in its final phase—in heaven).
But how do angels accomplish these missions?
While all angelic activity may be designated as supernatural in the sense that they are supernatural creatures (i.e., above nature [cf. Psalms 8:5; Hebrews 2:7), we shouldn’t conclude that their agency is miraculous (i.e., visibly, audibly exercising divine power) because the New Testament clearly teaches that the age of miracles has ended (1 Corinthians 13:8-10; E

While all angelic activity may be designated as supernatural in the sense that they are supernatural creatures (i.e., above nature [cf. Psalms 8:5; Hebrews 2:7), we shouldn’t conclude that their agency is miraculous (i.e., visibly, audibly exercising divine power) because the New Testament clearly teaches that the age of miracles has ended (1 Corinthians 13:8-10; Ephesians 4:8-16).
Since the miraculous era is gone and only God’s providential activity remains (i.e., the divine manipulation of natural law), we must conclude, I believe, that God employs angels in the implementation of his providential will on behalf of his saints in today’s world. This seems to be a reasonable conclusion, but beyond this, we should not speculate.
There certainly is no evidence that angels actually appear today, manifesting themselves in human form, as they did in ancient times when divine revelation was being implemented (see Acts 10).

Have You Checked Those Numbers Lately?
By Wayne Jackson | Christian Courier
Many people are “numbers-conscious” these days. We keep an eye on that blood pressure. It should be under 130/85. We watch our cholesterol; it ought be below 200. Some need to monitor their blood sugar. Between 80-120 is normal for early morning. When a child is sick, we get concerned when his temp goes much above 98.6.
But what about your contribution-to-the-Lord numbers? Do you give those much concern? There is significant emphasis on this theme in the Bible. There are solid reasons to believe that God is concerned with percentages.
The Hebrew word asar, rendered “tithe,” derives from a term signifying “ten.” In ancient times it represented a tenth of a certain portion.
Under the patriarchal regime, Abraham gave a tenth of his captured resources to the king/priest, Melchizedek (Gen. 14:20; cf. Heb. 7:4-10). Later, Jacob’s vow of ten percent seems to suggest an established practice among the patriarchs (Gen. 28:22).
When the Mosaic economy was instituted, the Hebrews were required to annually give ten percent of their produce and livestock. Actually, this was a tenth of the residue after other offerings had been made (Ex. 23:19; Dt. 26:1ff; Lev. 27:30ff.).
Many are surprised to learn that there is not a solitary New Testament passage that suggests the tithe as a standard for Christian giving. Rather, certain principles are set forth which instruct and challenge the child of God to give in a manner that is superior to Judaism.
Note the following truths — set forth in an abbreviated format.
Regular Giving
“Every Sunday, let each one of you lay aside by himself, if he earns anything, and put it in the treasury; so that there will be no collections when I come” (1 Cor. 16:2, McCord’s Translation).
Giving is mandated in a weekly act of worship.
Proportional Giving
Giving is required “according to [one’s] ability” (Acts 11:29), for the act of giving is acceptable “according as [a man] has, not according as he has not” (2 Cor. 8:12).
Those who earn more are required to give more — all other factors being equal. One person’s prosperity compensates for another’s lack; for the time may come when their circumstances could be reversed.
In proportionate (percentage) giving, a sense of “equality” prevails (2 Cor. 8:14). This suggests an equity among the saints that evinces fairness.
Generous Giving
The Christian giver is one who donates of his income in a “generous” fashion (Rom. 12:8; cf. 2 Cor. 8:2; 9:11).
The Philippian saints were so gracious that they gave beyond their ability, even begging Paul and his associates to accept their gift (which implies the apostle’s hesitancy) (2 Cor. 8:3-4).
Directed Giving
While it certainly is the case that one may give to various good causes to the glory of God (cf. Mk. 14:7), as opportunity presents itself (Gal. 6:10), it is likewise a fact that one is obliged to give each Lord’s day into the “treasury” of the congregation of which he is a member (1 Cor. 16:2).
Without such consistency the local church cannot conduct the sacred business to which it is obligated.
Exuberant Giving
The joy of giving is not developed accidentally. Early on, the experiences of life condition people to be self-centered. It is, in numerous ways, a dog-eat-dog world. From multiple sources we are negatively influenced with the “me-first” doctrine. And so, the need to be industrious, so that we can help others (Eph. 4:28), is a learned duty.
How thrilling it is, then, when one, after considerable study and training, begins to realize how much happiness giving generates within the heart.
Jesus said that those who are on the giving end of the equation are happier than those on the receiving end (Acts 20:35). God loves the person who has mastered the art of cheerful giving (2 Cor. 9:7).
The conscientious Bible student eventually learns that ten-percent, under ordinary circumstances, should be the starting point for a giving that will ripen with the years.
If our giving to Christ does not exceed ten percent, we need take a serious look at our finances, and immediately work towards a nobler level of Christian service.

The following is from the Facebook page of Tagiilima Esene, who is the preacher for the Honolulu Church of Christ…
I thought I give ChatGPT a challenge to see how it would respond. So I worded this question differently. One that I would not ask because biblically it does not make sense because the Bible only mentions one church and no denominations. So I thought I would just ask away.
Here is my question:
“What was the first denomination in Christianity?”
AI Responded:
The very first form of Christianity was not a denomination — it was simply the church that Jesus established and His apostles led in the first century.
Here’s how it developed historically:
🕊 1. The Original Church (1st Century)
Name used in Scripture: “Church of Christ” (Romans 16:16), “Church of God” (1 Corinthians 1:2), “The Way” (Acts 9:2).
Founded: On the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2), around A.D. 30 in Jerusalem.
Leadership: The apostles, with elders and deacons in local congregations (Acts 14:23; Philippians 1:1).
Doctrine: Based directly on the teachings of Christ and the apostles (Acts 2:42; Ephesians 4:4–6).
At this time, there were no denominations — only one united body of believers called “the church.”
⚔ 2. Division and the Rise of Denominations
Over the next centuries, divisions began to form as people departed from apostolic teaching.
2nd–4th centuries: Gradual rise of hierarchical structure, centered in Rome and other major cities. Bishops began gaining power beyond local congregations.
1054 A.D.: The Great Schism – Split between the Western (Roman Catholic) and Eastern (Orthodox) Churches. The first major denominational divide in Christianity.
1500s: Protestant Reformation – Reformers like Martin Luther protested corruption and unscriptural practices in the Catholic Church. New groups such as Lutherans, Calvinists (Reformed), and Anglicans formed.
📜 Summary
The first church was the church of Christ in Jerusalem (Acts 2).
The first denomination — in the sense of an official split — was the Roman Catholic Church separating from the original apostolic faith over time.
The first major denominational split occurred in 1054 A.D. between Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches.

Nine of the Ten Commandments in the New Testament?
By Russel G. Bell
Question
Would you please furnish specific Bible texts for each of the other nine commandments?
Answer
A few weeks ago, in an article, I mentioned that nine of the original Ten Commandments were mentioned in the New Testament, but the fourth commandment, “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy,” was not in the New Testament.
The reader evidently recognizes the absence of the Sabbath commandment in the New Testament and wonders if any of the other nine are absent. The answer is, “No.”
Here are nine of the Ten Commandments in the New Testament. These Old Testament laws brought into the New Testament are not all word for word, but their clear teachings are there.
1. No Other God: Exodus 20:3
1 Corinthians 8:4-6:
“Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one. For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth—as there are many gods and many lords—yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.” (NKJV)
2. No Graven Images: Exodus 20:4
1 Corinthians 10:14:
“Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”
3. Do Not Take the Lord’s Name in Vain: Exodus 20:7
Matthew 6:9:
“In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.”
Ephesians 4:29:
“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”
4. Keep the Sabbath Holy: Exodus 20:8
There is no command, precept, or example in the New Testament law for man to keep the Sabbath. This command was entirely omitted from the new covenant of Christ.
The Lord’s Day, the first day of the week, was given to be observed.
Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:1-2
5. Honor Your Father and Mother: Exodus 20:12
Ephesians 6:1-2:
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise.”
6. You Shall Not Kill: Exodus 20:13
1 Peter 4:15:
“But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters.”
7. Do Not Commit Adultery: Exodus 20:14
1 Corinthians 6:9-10:
“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.”
8. Do Not Steal: Exodus 20:15
Ephesians 4:28:
“Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.”
9. Do Not Bear False Witness: Exodus 20:16
Colossians 3:9:
“Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds.”
10. Do Not Covet: Exodus 20:17
Ephesians 5:5:
“For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.”

Making Prayer Effective
Gary Hampton
Prayer is the avenue God has given us to take things before His throne. The power of that statement causes faithful Christians to desire to make their prayers as effective as possible.
Effective prayer begins with the realization that it is directed to God (Matthew 6:5–8; 7:7–11). It is made when one approaches the Father through His Son. “Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who makes intercession for us” (Romans 8:34 NKJV; Hebrews 4:14–16; 9:24; 1 John 5:14–15).
Sin must be put away by one desiring to offer an effective prayer (Psalm 34:15–16; 66:18; Proverbs 15:29; 1 John 1:9). Setting aside sin also necessitates setting aside the sins others may have committed against the praying one. He must forgive before asking (Matthew 6:14–15; Mark 11:25–26; Colossians 3:13).
God is holy and cannot fellowship the unholy (1 Peter 1:15–16). Prayer is only useful if one believes God can answer (James 1:5–7; Ephesians 3:20; Mark 11:24; Isaiah 64:4). God will only answer those who set themselves aside. James declared, “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures” (James 4:3; Matthew 6:19–21). Jesus’ parable about the Pharisee and the tax collector demonstrates this point (Luke 18:9–14).
The hardest part of effective prayer may be that it must be practiced persistently. Jesus and Paul both stressed this important element (Luke 18:1–8; 1 Thessalonians 5:17; Romans 1:9; Philippians 1:3–4).
Those of us wanting to improve our prayer lives need to make a concerted effort in each of these areas.
Our God is able to answer!
