Wednesday Night Bible Study
Mark Anthony is conducting a fascinating Wednesday evening study on the origins of the Bible. The following article was inspired by that class.
APOCRYPHA
What Is the Significance of the Apocrypha?
The word Apocrypha originally meant “hidden things,” referring to a special body of information reserved for a select group. Eventually, the term came to describe a collection of fourteen or fifteen books, some of which appear in certain editions of the English Bible, particularly those distributed by the Roman Catholic Church.
The Roman Catholic Church regards several apocryphal books as inspired Scripture. These include:
- Tobit
- Judith
- Wisdom of Solomon
- Ecclesiasticus
- Baruch
- First and Second Maccabees
- Portions of Daniel
- Portions of Esther
Why are these books not accepted as inspired Scripture?
The evidence weighs against recognizing these books as part of God’s inspired Word:
- They were not included in the Hebrew Old Testament.
- They were written during the intertestamental period.
- Neither Jesus nor the apostles treated them as inspired.
- The books themselves never claim divine inspiration.
- They contain historical inaccuracies and contradictions.
- Their moral tone is significantly below that of Scripture.
While these writings provide valuable historical insight into the period between the Old and New Testaments, they are not considered products of divine inspiration.

BIBLE
What Is the Bible?
The English word Bible means “book” or “scroll.” It refers to the sixty-six inspired books that make up Holy Scripture:
- Thirty-nine Old Testament books
- Twenty-seven New Testament books
These are sometimes referred to as the Old Covenant and the New Covenant (Exodus 24:7; Matthew 26:28; Hebrews 8:7).
Old Testament
Written in Hebrew and Aramaic, the Old Testament is organized into four sections:
- Books of Law (Genesis–Deuteronomy)
- Historical Books (Joshua–Esther)
- Poetry (Job–Song of Solomon)
- Prophets (Isaiah–Malachi)
New Testament
Written in Koine Greek, the New Testament contains:
- Four Gospels (Matthew–John)
- Acts
- Twenty-one Epistles (Romans–Jude)
- Revelation
There is overwhelming evidence—including the unity of Scripture, fulfilled prophecy, and historical accuracy—that confirms the Bible’s claim to be God’s revelation to mankind (2 Timothy 3:16–17).
The Bible teaches:
- Humanity’s origin (Genesis 2:7)
- Humanity’s purpose (Ecclesiastes 12:13–14)
- Humanity’s eternal destiny (Matthew 25:46)
Our eternal destiny depends upon whether we obey or reject God’s will.
