Please Continue to Lift Up in Prayer…
- Pray for Christians around the world experiencing persecution, discrimination, and hardship because of their faith. Moreover, ask God to strengthen, protect, and encourage them. In addition, pray for peace in the many conflicts throughout the world, asking God to bring comfort to those who are suffering and for them to come to know Him. Lastly, pray for wisdom, compassion, and reconciliation for those who can help bring an end to violence.
- Our Seniors – Also, remember all of our senior saints, with special prayers for those who are homebound.
- Our Families – Furthermore, pray for families raising children in today’s world and for those carrying the heartache of loved ones who have wandered from the faith.

Booth Saved Lincoln – Featured Article for October 18 2026
By Neal Pollard / January 2, 2026
Admittedly, the very title might offend some people, but it is the truth. Of course, context helps.
A Story That Needs Context
To clarify, it was Edwin Booth, not John Wilkes. Likewise, it was Robert, not Abraham, Lincoln. At the time, Edwin and Robert were among customers buying passage on a sleeping car in Jersey City, New Jersey. Suddenly, Robert lost his balance and fell into an open space between the train and the station platform. In fact, by all accounts, he would have been crushed and likely killed if Edwin had not seized him and quickly pulled him out onto the platform.1
Why Context Matters
Indeed, context can be very helpful. Without it, however, we can draw some erroneous and even fatal conclusions. In fact, this is especially true with the Bible, a book many may know a little about but neglect to study with depth and purpose. As a result, many people base doctrines and conclusions on statements taken out of context.
- For example: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).
- “The Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart” (Exodus 9:12; 10:20; 14:8).
- “Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated” (Malachi 1:2–3; Romans 9:13).
- “Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Joel 2:32; Acts 2:21; Romans 10:13).
- “Where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20).
Read the Surrounding Verses
First, sometimes the content of a verse is understood better just by reading the verses before and after it. For example, that is the case in Acts 16:31 and Matthew 18:20. For example, in Acts, Paul and Silas teach the jailer about Jesus and that faith includes repentance and baptism (16:32–34). Similarly, in Matthew, the subject is not worship, but church discipline (18:15–18).
Consider the Broader Context
Second, sometimes a statement needs to be understood in light of the broader context. For instance, that would be the case regarding Pharaoh and Esau. Specifically, the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart through the plagues, causing the Egyptian king to rebel against God’s will and choose pride over penitence. Likewise, in the case of Esau, as Paul explains, the idea is God’s sovereign choice. Nevertheless, God was not unjust. Instead, He had a purpose for choosing Jacob over Esau (Romans 9:11).
Look at All the Bible Says
Third, sometimes a statement causes us to look deeper into all the Bible says about the subject. For example, consider the idea of calling on the name of the Lord to be saved. However, rather than salvation by confession only, the Bible teaches what is involved in calling on the name of the Lord. For instance, Ananias taught Saul that this is done when one is baptized, washing away sins (Acts 22:16).
Handling the Word Accurately
Therefore, when we are studying the Bible, we must always do so contextually. After all, it makes the difference in the conclusions we draw. Above all, God expects us to handle His word accurately! (2 Timothy 2:15). So, may we be the best Bible students we can be.
“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” – 2 Timothy 2:15
