Nine of the Ten Commandments in the New Testament?
By Russel G. Bell
Question
Would you please furnish specific Bible texts for each of the other nine commandments?
Answer
A few weeks ago, in an article, I mentioned that nine of the original Ten Commandments were mentioned in the New Testament, but the fourth commandment, “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy,” was not in the New Testament.
The reader evidently recognizes the absence of the Sabbath commandment in the New Testament and wonders if any of the other nine are absent. The answer is, “No.”
Here are nine of the Ten Commandments in the New Testament. These Old Testament laws brought into the New Testament are not all word for word, but their clear teachings are there.
1. No Other God: Exodus 20:3
1 Corinthians 8:4-6:
“Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one. For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth—as there are many gods and many lords—yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.” (NKJV)
2. No Graven Images: Exodus 20:4
1 Corinthians 10:14:
“Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”
3. Do Not Take the Lord’s Name in Vain: Exodus 20:7
Matthew 6:9:
“In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.”
Ephesians 4:29:
“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”
4. Keep the Sabbath Holy: Exodus 20:8
There is no command, precept, or example in the New Testament law for man to keep the Sabbath. This command was entirely omitted from the new covenant of Christ.
The Lord’s Day, the first day of the week, was given to be observed.
Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:1-2
5. Honor Your Father and Mother: Exodus 20:12
Ephesians 6:1-2:
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise.”
6. You Shall Not Kill: Exodus 20:13
1 Peter 4:15:
“But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters.”
7. Do Not Commit Adultery: Exodus 20:14
1 Corinthians 6:9-10:
“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.”
8. Do Not Steal: Exodus 20:15
Ephesians 4:28:
“Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.”
9. Do Not Bear False Witness: Exodus 20:16
Colossians 3:9:
“Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds.”
10. Do Not Covet: Exodus 20:17
Ephesians 5:5:
“For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.”
